Marionville Avenue

The brief for this extension to a semi-detached house in Meadowbank was like many others - to gain space at the rear for an open-plan kitchen/dining/living space with views to the garden, whilst gaining a space for a home office. However, an unusual set of constraints pushed the design into something more bespoke. Angled property boundaries led to an extension that twists from the back wall of the house, directing views away from the neighbours’ garden and capturing afternoon light. Restrictions on overshadowing to the opposite neighbours limited the options for an upper floor, resulting in a ‘floating’ timber box with an offset roof pitch to allow the passage of morning light. The consequence is a series of internal spaces that articulate their external form through twisting walls, shifting ceilings and sloping roofs.
